Weddings and Whatnots

“And may her bridegroom bring her to a house  / Where all’s accustomed, ceremonious / … How but in custom and ceremony / Are innocence and beauty born? / Ceremony’s a name for the rich horn, / And custom for the spreading laurel tree.” ~ W. B. Yeats

Kenny and NikkiToday my good friend, Norma’s, daughter, Nikki, is getting married. Yes, that is her and her beau. You may have seen or heard of him. There will only be immediate family attending — and the rest, I imagine, will be friends and acquaintances “in the business.” To say it’s going to be an affair to remember is, of course, a drastic understatement by any measure. Our family has known Nikki since she was fourteen years old. She’s a good egg as the saying goes. When we think of them as a couple, we really just think of her. She’s the important side of that relationship, to us. So we are with her in prayer and thought today, wishing her continued happiness as the future unfolds. Like all weddings, the planning of this one has had its peaks and valleys. Let’s face it, even if the wedding were in Podunk, U.S.A. (and not Beverly Hills) slip-ups and short fuses would transpire when it comes to preparations for the perfect ceremony and reception. It’s the small print written in the stars. It’s just the way it is. blue tiffany lace and pearlMy friend is retired. I am not. Days, sometimes weeks, fly by without us actually seeing one another, even though she only lives three houses down from me. Same side of the street. Funny that. So yesterday, while at my desk, I took a short break to text her {on my not-a-smart phone}:

“Just wanted to touch base with you, my friend, before your big weekend. Keep your JOY high and any frustrations low (very, very low). SMILE all.the.time. (People will be taking photos everywhere. You want to make sure that you look Fabulous and not Scandalous should you end up in People magazine…am I right?)  Make having FUN a priority and hob nob with everyone –> because this may be your one chance to do so! We will get together for coffee afterwards and you can tell me all your stories. ~ Love you, dear friend. :)”

After all, isn’t that what friends are for — to lift you up to greet the day and remind you to have a good time?

(And to surf the channels from Entertainment Tonight to E! for any news of the wedding AND a cameo shot of your friend — so you can jump up and down and give a whopping, “Woo-hoo!” for her special day?)

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up.” ~ Thessalonians 5:11

Here’s to celebrating all the moments with your friends, whether you are sitting across the table from each other, or toasting with them across zip codes.
